Books & memes

I have been tagged by Darlene of Darlene’s Hodgepodge to do a Meme.  Darlene began blogging at the very young age of 82!

YES! I did say 82.

Since then despite a fall and hip surgery she has returned to living alone and blogging. A very wise and humorous lady, I could learn plenty just sitting at Darlene’s feet.

The rules are to pick the book nearest to you, turn to page 161 and copy the fifth sentence. I know I have done this sort of thing before, but I do manage to read and complete at least one book a year! You don’t believe me?

Well here are just a few:

*
*
*

Seriously now the book to hand is ‘From here, you can’t see Paris’ by Michael Sanders

So to page 161, sentence five

Yes, I am of the generation when agriculture passes from the Middle Ages to what we see now.’

I am to tag five more people to play this game so the five I have chosen are:

They make me struggle and suffer while chewing my pen each week, so now it is my turn to torment them!

Have fun.

Six on the Second

elfinamsterdam tagged me all because she in turn was tagged by Mr Rick O’Shea, to yet another MeMe

The rules:

  1. Put the link of the person who tagged you on your blog. (I did that first).
  2. Write the rules. (rules? Make your own).
  3. Mention 6 things or habits of no real importance about you. (see below).
  4. Tag 6 persons adding their links directly. (I would rather leave it open to anyone who wishes to try it).
  5. Alert the persons that you tagged them. (no need).

6 Things about me:

  1. I have a scar above my left eye that goes through my eyebrow.
  2. My indoor shoes are bright pink
  3. Emerald green is my favourite colour.
  4. I own a skipping rope and a Hula Hoop.
  5. I was three times a Bridesmaid and once a Bride.
  6. I chased Dr Heartthrob down the corridor in the hospital on Thursday, it beats waiting two months for a stress test.

Go on, you can do better than I did!

Meme – I (me)

I am: not sure where I stole this idea from, but I thought it might get me through a blank patch.

I want: for little. I can only wear one pair of shoes at a time.

I have: many faults

I wish: peace and contentment for those I love.

I fear: hypothermia because my body goes cold without me realising it.

I search: for my spectacles when they are already on my face

I wonder: where the sunshine is

I regret: nothing! Time spent on regrets is time wasted.

I love: people, travel, food, wine, G&T and laughter.

I always: think that I am still thirty

I usually: arrive on time

I am not: into bad manners or loud music

I dance: around the house as I chase the dust from place to place

I sing: only when alone and nobody can hear me

I never: eat butter

I rarely: travel by bus

I cry: with laughter

I know: ageing, aches & pains, having to take pills to keep me going, but don’t tell anyone!

I need: caring, friendly, good mannered friends that have a good sense of humour.

I should: set Tobias down and go clean my windows

Midlife Meme

a la Going like Sixty

Who has been tagged several times recently to try Memes. He complained that the questions were all suitable for 20 something females so I and some others called his bluff to write his own Meme. He did. Now I suppose I have to take my canal barges out of my mouth and give it a try!

Midlife Meme

Do you like sports drinks? NO! They are all aspartame & water.

Now can you do better than that?

The Power of Love

Hails at Coffee Helps tagged me for a Photo-story.

The idea is to rummage around in your photo folders in the computer, dust them down and tidy up the shelf ready for inspection.  Then open folder number four and select the fourth photo. Insert said photo  here and tell the story behind it.

Since Today is not the fourth but the sixth of February, I cheated and chose the sixth folder.  It was still up there in the ‘B’ section.

Sixth folder… sixth photo… Voila!

I know some of you have seen it before.  It was taken post Irish Blog Awards in March of last year.  That is me - didn’t I look young?  The camera never lies! ;)  Now no rotten tomatoes please, you are supposed to be nice to old ladies!

On the table beside me are my computer hard-drive that George my Son-in-Law had updated for me, The Champagne I won at the Irish Blog Awards 2008 and some beautiful flowers that arrived the following morning - Mother’s Day.

Towards the end of February last year I wrote the post Flower Power, it was inspired by Eamonn of Flowers Made Easy who was hosting a bloggers competition with a prize for ‘the best blog post about your mum‘.  Since my mother was dead, I told the story of another mother’s great love.  My post was not a winner but I was!  Elly wrote a post about me and told dreadful lies said nice nice things about me.  Honest, I didn’t bribe her… I didn’t know she had written it.

Well you can imagine my surprise when on Wednesday last I had a new comment on Flower Power.  It was from Eamonn telling me about another competition, this time for St Valentine’s Day.  All the details are below.

So, on with the thinking caps, and out with the pencils… if you are not in then you can’t win!  Stop and think for a moment ,about when you first realised that you were truly madly deeply in love with the light of your life; then sit and write about it.  Wouldn’t it be worth it to win the 12 Red Roses, a Bottle of Bubbly and a box of Chocs!

Now if only I had a Truelove… well I might have had a go myself!

Paddy’s Bidding

I’ve taken up the challenge of another meme from Paddy Bloggit.  He was tagged by Ramana of Ramana’s Musings and he passed it on to his harem.
Steph has managed to complete her list, and I am sure that Baino will not be far behind.  As Queen of ‘the zippy- up yoke in the corner’, I had better get a move on.

  • Favourite drink? It varies with the time of day, boiled water for breakfast.  Green tea with mint to sip with my lunch, and fresh brewed black Coffee in the afternoon or to follow dinner. On the alcoholic side good wine, a G&T or a G&G and to treat a cough there is nothing better than a Hot Port with honey!  *cough, cough*

  • Do you want your friends to do this quiz? I will leave it open for people to choose.
  • Who is the most likely to respond? I am sure several of my commenter’s will try it!
  • Living arrangements? Alas, it seems to be me and the spiders!
  • When was the last time you cried? Today, but they were tears of laughter!
  • What is on the floor of your closet? We call them wardrobes.  Shoes.

Let’s say “Hi!

With apologies to Ross Parker the author of ‘We’ll Meet Again’ a favourite tune for the Forces Sweetheart from WW11 - Dame Vera Lynn

Let’s say “Hi” with a smile, dear.
To chat a while, dear, we must start.
Don’t let that starting upset you,
I’ll not forget you, sweethearts.

We’ll meet I hope, I know where, make it fast, I want to meet together quite soon in Cork

Keep blogging through, just like you always do, ‘till the Blog Awards drive the dark clouds far from Cork.

So will you please say “Hello” If your folks I don’t know tell me I won’t be wrong?
You’ll be happy to know that I so want to go, I am singing this song.
We’ll meet at last, I know where, make it fast, I want to meet quite soon way down in Cork

With the 2009 Irish Blog Awards almost upon us, a simple Meme is just the thing.

That whipper-snapper Rick O’Shea started it. I would link to him if I could see his blog

This Meme is simple.

Name 5 bloggers you haven’t met in the flesh before that you’d like to say hi to at the Blog Awards, say why if you want, link to them. They then, in turn, link to 5 bloggers they’d like to meet and so on.

That’s it. It’s just an icebreaker for the night. Yes, I know they might not be coming but it might act as an incentive.

I’d like to meet:

Holy Shmoly - Donncha has always been willing to offer help and encouragement, no matter how silly my question. His camera eye fascinates me.

Trust Tommy - A 14 year old Toyboy! Need I say more?

Paddyanglican - who will be freshly returned from singing with the Corrigan Brothers, representing Moneygall and Ireland at the Grand Festivities in honour of new President Barak Obama near the White House. Well you never know he might bring me up to date on all the background gossip. ;)

Caricatures Ireland - Irish caricaturist Allan Cavanagh whose caricatures are witty and innovative and I would love to sit, talk and discover how he decides who is a good subject and perhaps sit for him sometime. We might discover the real Grannymar!

Ian Poulton – A long time commenter whose life in Ministry has straddled both sides of this island. Regularly Ian writes posts that are thought provoking and at times they make me uncomfortable in the best meaning of the word.

I hear you….  Yes I did pick five toyboys… I have my reputation to think about

We girls are more organised; and since we learned from last year how much fun it was to meet up in advance of the main event, we are once again, thanks to Sabrina Dent, having a Ladies Tea Party on the afternoon of 21st Feb in Cork.

Well then, to keep you happy:

Reluctant Memsahib - Realistically it may not happen this time since Anthea lives in Tanzania with her husband and children. She moved from a farm within easy striking distance of one of the country’s busiest cities leaving all the things we women take for granted, such as day school for the children, regular appointments with a hairdresser and lunches with friends. Home now is an Outpost, a place once famous as brief home to Dr Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley; her older children have had to be bundled off to boarding school a 12 hour drive away. To while away the hours she writes, walks & teaches her youngest at home & keeps in touch with the outside world by phone. Her life is so different to mine and sounds like something I have only known from the pages of a book

OK I don’t hold a grudge, so I will link to yer man.. What’s his name? Oh yeah, Rick somebody

Revving up the R’s with 7 Things

Judy at Imagine had a meme the other day and she invited her followers commenter’s to try it.

How you do it: Either ask me for a letter, or choose one for yourself

With 26 letters in the alphabet I would never be happy, so I chose to ask and be restricted to just one letter. Judy selected the letter R.

In the meantime I was tagged by Laura Czajkowski who in turn was tagged by Jamie Hemmett, to:

Share 7 Things Not Previously Known about me!

Being lazy I combined the two and came up with 7 things beginning with the letter R

Radio – By choice I have no television but radio is my constant companion 24/7. Living alone it adds sound to my world and I learn something new every day. If you asked, the last time I slept right through the night, it was pre December 1991! I consider three consecutive hours a good nights sleep nowadays. BBC World Service is my companion through the starlight hours. I leave it turned low in the hope it lulls me to sleep, but some of the programmes are better than those by day.

Refreshment – We all need refreshment and for me there is nothing I like more than a good meal and a bottle of nice wine shared with real friends.

Reservation – At this point I have a reservation made for a flight to Cork for the Irish Blog Awards. If you see me at the airport please do not fret – I have arranged for a wheelchair. It is a condition imposed by my GP because standing still or in queues causes me to become dizzy and fall. On my own I deal with it, but people round me seem to fuss and this causes me extra unnecessary stress. Anyway my son-in-Law has waited for a long time to push me around. ;)

Ribbon – As a young girl I was never without a ribbon in my hair. I seemed to have one for every day and to match every dress.

Richard – was my favourite name for a boy. Had fate given me a son instead of Elly he would have been called Richard John. Mind you that might have caused a problem, since Jack decided very early on that our baby would be a girl! If it was a boy he would have to go back from whence he came. No amount of talking would make Jack change his mind, so thanks Elly for being a girl!

Rustle – Clothes don’t rustle anymore. Modern day clothing may be very comfortable but being sometimes shapeless and unstructured they lack that unique feeling. There was something special about dressing up to attend a dance in silk or taffeta garments that rustled in motion. With my love of sewing and small frame I made a new dress or three for each season.

Requiem – When my time comes – and I hope it is not soon, I wish to be disposed of simply and quickly wherever I may fall. No need to drag my mortal remains all over the country. Then when I am out of the way, remember me with laughter & song and drink a toast to my memory!

Homemaking

I have been tagged by Susan of arkonite’s blog http://arkonitebabe.blogspot.com/ to complete the A - Z of Homemaking, now lets see how I get on:

A is for Aprons - yes/no? If yes, what’s your favourite?
I grew up wearing bright cotton aprons to protect my clothes when helping in the kitchen. Now I have two PVC aprons for cooking and baking days, they are purely functional.

B is for Baking - favourite thing to bake?
Cooking for one is soul destroying! I used to bake and cook every day when my husband was alive and Elly was at home. I cook a meal for perhaps four or six, have one portion then cool and freeze the rest in portions for days I don’t feel like cooking.

C is for Clothesline - do you have one?
Yes, I have a wonderful line across the back garden. Being high up I get full benefit from the wind, some days if I open the back door the clothes blow right in! ;)

D is for Donuts - have you ever made them?
Yes, Mammy made them quite often to have after lunch. I regularly helped to make them while she did something else. They were not your regular donuts, more a scone-like texture with jam in the middle. (I feel a blog post coming on…!)

E is for Every Day - one homemaking task you do every day.
Will getting out of bed do? ;) Nowadays I wash dishes after every meal. Everything else is done when I feel like it or health allows.

F is for Freezer - do you have a separate deep freeze?
No need for one. Fridge freezer is enough for my needs.

G is for Garbage Disposal Unit - do you have one?
Me  Seriously I don’t know of anyone in Ireland who has one.

H is for Handbook - what’s your favourite homemaking resource?
Trial and error – well that is how I learned.

I is for Ironing - love or hate it?
I actually love it. A good play on the radio or nice music and a few toffees to chew on and I am happy. When I was young the load often contained 15 shirts; umpteen sheets, pillowcases and quilt-covers, cotton dresses, tablecloths and napkins and more hankies than a large box of tissues! All those items had to he starched first. Will I continue?

Thank the Lord for easy-care-no-iron clothing!

J is for Junk Drawer - yes/no? If yes, where is it?

Not really. I like to be able to find things when I need them so the best way is for them to have a home and be put back when finished with. I am not a hoarder. If I can’t use something then I try to pass it on to somebody who has a need for the item.

K is for Kitchen - colour and decorating scheme?
My kitchen is small and simple, little changed since the house was built. It functions well for my needs so why change it? I do change the colour scheme – curtains and paintwork from time to time.

L is for Love - what’s your favourite part of homemaking?
I put plenty of love & effort into homemaking when Jack was alive and Elly was at home. Jack and I worked well together and did all our own decorating. Once we started, a great companionable silence descended and we worked happily away side by side for hours without a word being spoken. I made all my own curtains over the years, thankfully only the living room window measured 14ft wide by 7ft high! The others were all more manageable sizes. I made duvet covers and fitted sheets, covered chairs and did all the cooking, baking and cleaning (that includes the chimney), this is beginning to sound like a CV so I had better stop!

M is for Mop - do you have one?
I do have a spongy one on a telescopic pole and I use it for the high windows outside.

N is for Nylons - machine or hand wash?
Nylons? I remember them! I wore tights once this year. I put them in a pillowcase and tie a knot in it and add to the washing load in the machine.

O is for Oven - do you use a window or open the oven door to check?
I have two doors, the inner one is glass. Mind you I still open both to check for doneness.

P is for Pizza - what do you put on yours?
Pizza involves cheese, so they are out for me – no dairy!

Q is for quiet - what do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment?
Living alone there are far too many quiet moments!

R is for Recipe Card Box - yes/no? If yes, what does it look like?
No. I have three A5 ring binders with wipe clean covers. I type the recipes and put them in plastic pockets, all sorted by type e.g. soups cakes etc. They are also stored on my computer, which makes Food Mondays easier.

S is Style of House - what style is your house?
Detached bungalow, 3 bed.

T is for Tablecloths - do you use them?
I like to. Not when I am alone, but yes if I am having guests for a Dinner. Family get to eat off the old china – so if you got the old stuff and no tablecloths – consider yourself family ;)

U is for Under The Kitchen Sink - organised or toxic wasteland?
Organised, little changed in 30 years. I could find things with my eyes closed.

V is for Vacuum - how many times a week?
Used to do it every day, now it is more like once a week.
W is for Wash - how many loads of washing do you do each week?
It takes more than seven sets of sexy underwear to fill the washing machine :!: A dark and a light load and sometimes a third wash. Woollens are done by hand.

X’s - Do you keep a daily list of things to do that you cross off?
Not any more.

Y is for Yard - who does what?
Nowadays – me or nobody!

Zzzz’s - what’s the last homemaking task you do before bed in the evening?
Switch off and unplug items and that included the computer!

Tags open, you try if you fancy it.
