Photographing the Alphabet ~ A

It is time I began another challenge on my ‘To Do List for 2013‘, to photograph the alphabet.

I didn’t mean to line up each of the letters, but years ago it would have been an easy task with magnetic letters on the fridge. We actually had two sets of them and the numbers. Each evening the ten words of the spelling homework were lined up in a column.

For the next twenty six Saturdays, this challenge will have pride of place. The plan this time round, is to take the letters in order and find a word beginning with that letter and a photograph or photographs to go with it.

Ancient - Giant’s Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north east coast of Northern Ireland.

Many features in the surrounding landscape have acquired names such as the famous wishing chair, the giants boot, the ladies fan, the giants organ, the chimney stacks, the giants chair, to name a few.

The area is a haven for sea birds such as fulmar, petrel, cormorant, shag, redshank guillemot and razorbill.

The weathered rock formations host a number of rare and unusual plants including sea spleenwort, hare’s foot trefoil, vernal squill, sea fescue and frog orchid. ~ Wikipedia

Fascinating. There is a bridge called Sri Ram Sethu in the South of India with its own myth and controversy, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam%27s_Bridge Oddly enough, the Brits called it Adams Bridge fitting nicely with your challenge!

Mike - By American standards, it is very small, but way more ancient than I am! ;)

Are these your own photos? If so, awesome! Unusual volcanic formations, not seen in Hawaii…yet.

Gigi - All the photos were taken with my FujFilm. Some of them are from a few years ago and from different months of the year.

Judy - The cliff edge walk is amazing. We did it when Elly was about six years old. Alas, some of it is railed off now because it is deemed too dangerous.

Wonderful! I have never been to Ireland, but my son and his wife visited Dublin a while back, as did my sister back in the early 1960s. I doubt I will get there now. Sigh. Dianne

PS clever project to photograph the alphabet. Maybe I will be a copycat someday.

I’ve been there twice, GM, and it is awe inspiring and I love the legend associated with it too. We learned it in school 200 years ago.

Dianne - We all gain inspiration from each other, so I hope you do take up this idea and I look forward to seeing how you deal with it.

WWW - I am only about an hour from the Giant’s Causeway, so it is a regular stop when taking my visitor’s to see the beauty spots.

Beeblu - On a clear day. it is wonderful.

GREAT photos!! I have never been to the Giant’s Causeway, but it’s definitely on my ‘to do’ list! I know it will be fascinating, and it’s certainly beautiful.

    One day….

To appreciate the Giant’s Causeway and the North Antrim Coast, you need a full long summers day there.

No doubt that’ll lead to many new discoveries–or re-discoveries as it were! Sounds like fun.
