Thursday Special ~ Eric

As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers.

I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like   Mission Control and asked him to come over.

Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

As he was walking away, I called after him, ‘So, what was wrong?

He replied, ‘It was an ID ten T error.’

I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, ‘An, ID ten T error? What’s that? In case I need to fix it again.’

Eric grinned…. ‘Haven’t you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?

‘No,’ I replied.

‘Write it down,’ he said, ‘and I think you’ll figure it out.’

So I wrote down:

ID 10 T

ID10T

I used to like Eric, the little….. &*$T*%@!

Thanks Brighid for this weeks contribution.

When it comes to computers, my Eric is Ranjan and I am sure that he has an equally mysterious name for me.

    Oh I love that
My Grandson spends quite a lot of time on the Cbeebies website. He was printing out a lot of rubbish from it though and I explained to him about the cost of the coloured ink and would he not print the stuff out. He agreed. Yesterday hubby and I were in the study with him and he went to ‘print’ on the screen. He turned round to his Papa and said ‘It’s ok I have changed the print to black and white’……………………..He’s four!!!! We were so shocked we forgot to ask him how he did it. LOL. Grannymar looks like I have a passing child to grab when things go wrong :)

    Grannymar,

I have finally figured out why the kids are so computer literate and SMART and we oldies are not as proficient as they are.

Did it ever dawn on any of us that we got our computers when we were at least 40 or 50 years old and someone hooked it up for us in a little room where we sat all by ourselves and tried to make sense of it? Nobody to ask a question of unless you wanted to spend an hour on hold waiting for tech support. So, we muddled through as best we could and learned by doing and making mistakes.

Now, contrast that to the experiences the kids have with their computers. Every school and almost every home has a computer for the kid’s use. AND, he is surrounded by Tech Support every minute of the day. If HE doesn’t know why a particular function will not work,he has only to look around and ask one or two of the 10 kids that are there with him how to correct the problem. A couple of them will know the answer because THEY had the same problem yesterday and got the answer from THEIR pals.

I think us “Oldies” did a pretty good job of learning this complicated system all by ourselves with only a little help from the kid next door.

I don’t care what my kids call me when they have to fix my computer, as long as they fix it.

WWW - I am learning that trick too. Sometimes I wish I could reboot my life to get it going at a faster pace!

Nancy - You forgot one thing…. We were constantly told “Don’t touch, or you will break it!” Nowadays the little’uns learn by putting everything in their mouths.

Mayo - I got selective hearing for that one.

Wow, I’m bowled over that you used a joke I sent in. I got it from my Dad (the 86 yr old), who taught himself how to be computer literate a few years ago. Always learning he is.

So that would make you a bit of a PEBKAC then? (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair) hehehehe!

Brighid - You thank your dad from me!

    Baino - PEBKAC, that’s me!

I fell for that hook line and sinker…and was wondering if little Irish boys are as obnoxious as some little American boys can be (sometimes). Then I saw it was a joke. But a good one, nonetheless, that I hope to reuse one day–probably very soon with my next goof.

Alice - These stories are made to do the rounds, otherwise we would never see them, so enjoy and use.

You are telling me! I am pretty savvy with the computer having learnt it mostly by myself.

I have three nerds–Jai (son), Vanada (DIL) and Nitila (Daughter) to help me out. Frankly Ranjan my nephew just takes over and does it–long distance. BTW Vandana is a Hardware Engineer who is now running after two kids, a husband and 2 parents-in-law.

Padmini - Ranjan knows what he is about!
