Art with My Needle ~ Week 26

Total excuse for a post today.

My glasses had a fall and I need to have them looked at so am unable to type for more than a minute or two.

I made this flower way back.

The stem was a wax drinking straw with the bendy part close to the flower was covered in felt.  The yellow centre of the flower was fabric paint.

Now off to sort out my eyes!

The detail on the leaf is gorgeous, that’s very pretty. Great idea re the straw as well, I had been thinking of making a crochet bunch of flowers so that i’d always have something in a vase but I was put off by the stems, will have to try that out.

PS. hope you get your glasses sorted out soon.

I am back with repaired glasses and seeing straight once more. I took the opportunity to make an appointment to have the eyes checked at the beginning of the month. so not all bad then!

Marian - The leaf was felt backed with fine Vilene to gave the underside a ighter look, then I worked in free machining for the veining of the leaf. Back at that time I actually made a hanging basket of Macrame and filled it with leaves and flowers like this in different colours. Alas I am unable to find any photos of it.

If you find the straws are too thick, try some florist’s or fine wire to use for the stems and wrap them in in embroidery cotton.

What a beautiful flower. Your ingenuity never ceases to amaze me!

As it happens, I was having my eyes tested this morning. The usual checks for cataracts, glaucoma, detached retina and a dozen other scary aberrations but fortunately 100% optical health as before….

Ah! A new species…maybe even Genus…allied to the Primula family I
    think!

Glad your eyes are fine, GM, lovely piece, are the flower petals satin stitch?

I don’t know how you managed to post without glasses. I can’t see the words at all without mine!

Nick - That is a very early sample and one I almost binned. glad the eye test went well. I hope I do as well.

Magpie - It will not survive in damp conditions!

WWW - I have to disappoint you — the petals were cut from felt and glued into the top of the straw.

Baino - It was with difficulty and a little blurred!

    Grannymar, love that “pink”.

You are so creative, Grannymar. Is there nothing done with fabric that you haven’t attempted? Well, maybe you haven’t hung giant curtains in Central Park like that couple did some years ago.

    Maynard - Which pink?

Darlene - I made all the curtains for my house including those for a wall to wall, floor to ceiling window in my lounge room. Being fully lined they are real heavy and I doubt if I would be able to remove or hang them on my own now.

    On the flower, of course!

You told us about a straw & felt, but didn’t mention that stitchery—in the post—without your glasses.
My wedding was pink & green. The bridesmaid dresses, the decoration on the white cake, Mother’s dress. (Pink & green was her idea but I loved it too.)

Maynard - I like the pink of the petals too.

BHB - The only stitching was in the leaf, and I mentioned it (when I had my glasses back) in a comment above to Marian.

Thanks for the advice, the straws could work though because crochet flowers would be a bit chunky if I was using regular yarn….. another project to add to the ever increasing list! :-)

Marian - Glad it was helpful.
