Art with My Needle ~ Week 22

I am running late today so I will give you a sample of using only one stitch.

Fly stitch is the one I have chosen

It looks like a letter Y

Altering the shape other effects can easily be achieved.

Same stitch worked closely on the left and the group on the right giving movement.

Introducing different colour and some exaggerated stitches can change the work completly.

For anyone beginning embroidery a good point of online reference for stitches is this needlework dictionary. Not alone will it show you how a stitch is worked but plenty of variations for each one.

One to be bookmarked, I think!

I was so moved by your piece in Homepages, which I was given as a New Year present. The courage you show is helping me to bear the news of my brother-in-law’s death in Haiti. Thank you

I am working on tea cozies and trying out different embroidery on them.
(Pics of them currently posted on my blog) I have so many ideas but don’t know how to make them come to life. So your post and link has perfect timing! I can’t wait to try a few.. Thank you so much!

Eleanor - I have been thinking and praying for those who are suffering or have lost loved ones in the dreadful disaster in Haiti. I am pleased that you found The light went out… helpful. The follow up post For Jo may also bring you comfort.

Kimme - I will be over shortly to see the tea cozies. I hoped that the site I mentioned above would be useful. One to be bookmarked for further reference.

I enjoy needlepoint! I have a problem with which hand to use or which side of my brain is in control-I’m ambidextrous, which caused a problem when I tried to knit! So when I tried needlepoint I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t backwards and I enjoy doing it, especially pillowcases, usally I give them to newly weds. I’m still a beginner, but when I do it, I find it relaxes me. I’m going to try your stitch.

Marian - It is a very simple stitch and suitable for playing with.

Judy H - how confusing for you. With cross stitch or needlepoint it does not matter so long as all the stitches are worked in the same direction. I must say I find it relaxing.

Love to see old stiches brought to life again. Judy: I had the devil of a time learning to knit and crochet, tell Himself’s granny sat down opposite me and showed me how.

As you know GM these are my very favourite posts of yours. My mother was a marvellous embroiderest, like yourself, and she comes alive in these pages of yours. I will bookmark the site you referenced.

Brighid - That made me laugh. I could never manage crochet holding it in the prescribed way. I held it like knitting and never looked back.

WWW - Being honest the post today was in rather a hurry and I wondered what I could share in a short couple of minutes. Thankfully it proved helpful. That site has a wonderful A to Z list of stitches and variations - with diagrams.

Grannymar, Thank you for stopping by my blog :)
I used the link you provided to help on a new tea cosy
and it turned out really cute… very basic with some
button stitches and French knots. I am still learning,
but I look forward to trying out more of the stitches
on the link you gave. I put on my blog that you
posted the link and I mentioned your blog… I hope
    you don’t mind.

    Have a wonderful weekend! Kimme
