A Collection of Canes, I wonder if that is the correct term.

See you at 3pm GMT!  That can mean Greenwich Mean Time or Grannymar time!

Well it is Friday, and the LBC are busy preparing for your visit.

    Nice Picture!

I think they are canes, sometimes called “walking sticks”.

I have confined this site to one walking stick, the Indian Walking Stick Insect (Species: Carausius morosus) . There are many other species of walking sticks and information about them can be found at other sites listed in the “References” li

Vicki, you may be wrong. Rummy, seems to have the real walking stick—”the Indian Walking Stick”.
Rummy tell us about your “Stick”!

Vicki - They are indeed walking canes or sticks, I was wondering about the collective term for them.

Maynard - You get more confusing by the minute. What are you on today?

Mayo, I inevitably take a walking stick when I leave home, though I do not need one inside the home where I know the terrain and can lean on various things like the banister, or chairbacks or whatever.

This is more psychological than any actual need. For instance, when I am on my regular walk, I just carry the walking stick in my left hand. I need to use it when I am walking slowly or if I have to stand around for long.

I have a collection of walking sticks presented to me by many well wishers who do not know what else to give me. One of these days, I shall publish a photograph of the collection. The collection includes a pair of elbow crutches too!

Vicky, some of them are canes and some could well be made from wood turned in a lathe with some kind of design on them. I use both types. The canes are lighter to carry but quite effective in actual use though they bend a little when one puts weight on them.

Dope? The guys( my suppliers)– are not at the street corners yet, so I’m smoking a “Domimican Macanudo!”– leaning on my “stick!”

Ramana - I have a walking stick, a pair of hiking poles and a pair of crutches, the latter are on loan and thanks for the reminder… I must return them to the hospital. I use neither the stick or hiking pole since hip replacement as I find they give me an ache in my back.

Maynard - go easy on those things!

I have no idea what the proper term for a collection of them is - but we could have some fun thinking one up!!

I’m not sure but I think canes have a handle of some sort at the top and sticks don’t.
My SIL got me a beautiful walking stick this past summer. It has a fork’ed horn antler at the top. I have been carrying it to ward off the lechers when I take wee Gus for his walks.

Brighid - I suppose the name does not really matter so long it does the job intended>

How about a clutter of canes ? Or maybe a clatter …that’s the noise made when they fall down!

I have few…there are a couple of dress canes with silver tops (one for each son) a couple of crooks made of hazel by an old man in Devon, a neck crook and a leg crook, a weird and wonderful stick covered in knobs and nodules, a walking stick made from Holly a thumb stick fro Hazel and various others.

Perhaps a blog post here for me…mmm

Magpie, I like the idea of a clatter of canes!

I look forward to the post with photos of your delightful sounding specimens.
