Handy Hints for Wednesday ~ 31

“Take a pair of sparkling eyes,
Hidden, ever and anon,
In a merciful eclipse–
Do not heed their mild surprise–
Having passed the Rubicon,
Take a pair of rosy lips…..”

Never mind the sparkling eyes, just take a bar of soap instead:

Use a bar of soap as a pin cushion.  While sewing the soap on the needle or pins helps them to pass through the fabric easily.

If a light bulb breaks in the socket there is an easy remedy.  Switch off the power and then stick a bar of soap into jagged edges, use soap as a handle and twist to remove the broken bulb.

During the recent very hot weather the tarmac on the roads and pavements was melting.  To remove road tar from cars use sodium bicarbonate on a damp cloth or a little drop of petrol on a soft dry cloth to remove it.

Two DIY tips for the handy person:

To keep nails from splitting wood. Blunt sharp end of nail before you use it by tapping the point with a hammer.

When drilling tiles; to prevent the drill from slipping and scratching the surface of the tiles, put a strip of plaster on the tile where you wish to drill and work as normal.

Masking tape works just as well when drilling tiles. Way cheaper than plasters too. And yes, in case you’re wondering, I have used masking tape on cuts too.

    Primal,

Masking tape has many uses, I always have a roll of it in the cupboard.

Butter or (cheaper still?) margarine for removing tar and bletch from children and clothes!(I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before)

Old Carpenters’ trick I’d forgotten about! Thnaks for the reminder>

    Magpie,

I think you did mention the butter or marg tip. Today I was thinking about the way the tar stuck to the paintwork on cars during hot weather.

Yes, Grannymar, BUT, those needles and pins hurt like hell when you try to use that soap for a bath.

I have switched to a regular pin cushion because I am tired of being all scratched up and scarred from using the same bar for both a pin cushion and a bath…. Tell me, am I doing something wrong?

Sewing needles in soap! Now why did I not think of that earlier? Now that I have to stitch all my buttons by myself, I needed this advise alright! Thanks Grannymar.

Not having a car I would’nt know about that…mother used margarine or lard on our sandals.

I was wondering when you were expecting weather hot enough to melt tar? We’ve had our summer surely?

I agree with Nancy. Those needles and pins hurt like hell when you’re taking a bath.

But worse is the bath soap that was stuck into the jagged edges of a broken light bulb in the socket. OUCH! Should I go to the Emergency Room?

Grannymar, you usually give good advice, but you should stay away from giving—Tips?

Grannymar didn’t say to eat a light bulb. She only said to stick it in our soap.

Did you all have fun this evening? I was out for dinner the craic was good and the wine has left me with a warm glow.

@Nancy & Bikehikebabe - I thin you both need to break open a new bar of soap for the bath and to soothe all those scratches why not have a vinegar bath!

@Ramana - What are you up to that all your buttons need replacing? ;)

@Magpie - We did have summer for one weekend and it was warm enough to melt the tar on the roads. Can youplease stop talking about eating light bulbs or everyone will want the recipe on Monday!

@Alice - I am beginning to think my blog will need a health warning!
