Handy Hints for Wednesday ~ 30

Little did I realise thirty weeks ago when I made an appearance on RTE’s The Afternoon Show that it would lead to a regular post every Wednesday for handy hints.  The hints came easily at first, but in the last couple of weeks I have found it more of a struggle.  I am running a little dry for new tips at the moment.  Last week the well was very dry and in a mini panic I threw down the gauntlet to my blogging friends.  You all responded and we had fun, laughter and helpful hints!  If the drought continues I will discontinue this regular spot and find another way to fill a Wednesday.

In the mean time…

Recently I recieved via several emails the tip of how to open a locked car with the keys inside.  The method assumed that the car had a bleep system to unlock the doors.  The tip involved using a mobile phone to call the other holder of said keys and have them click their bleeper into the phone as you pointed your phone at the dashboard.  During the week I spoke to an RAC man trying to open a locked car.  I asked if he had tried the method above and he informed me that it ONLY works for Renault cars.  So if you got that email, don’t depend on it working for you!

In Ireland we are experiencing some welcome hot weather.  Perhaps with the heat you find it hard to sleep.  Baby powder sprinkled on the sheets will absorb moisture, make the bed smell nice and aid sleeping.

When you are going to the beach for the day, leave the rug at home and take an old flat sheet instead.  The sand won’t stick in the fibres and it will be easy to launder at the end of the day.  Sales & bargain bins are a great place to find odd sheets for this purpose.

If you are feeling a little overcooked after a day in the sun, try soaking in a cool (but not cold) bath with a handful of bicarbonate of soda swished in the water. A half hour should do the job nicely!

Try to keep the freezer full, it works better this way particularly in summer.  Loaves of bread help fill the extra space.

    The other essential for the hot weather is of course loads of ice cream! I usually find it hard to sleep in very hot weather but because of the extra effort of moving I’m sleeping like a baby.

    Grannymar,

    About tip #2- Baby Powder sprinkled on the sheets.

    You are right. This feels very good; but a note of caution. Be extra careful you don’t make a baby to go with the powder…

    Tip # 3- Making your bed on the beach.

    Reread caution # 2

    re #2 Nancy… no problem …. for your warning to be useful one has to have the wherewithal in the first place….

    Re freezers…if no loaves of bread …use screwed up newspaper to fill the spaces or some of Nick’s ice cream perhaps!

    Are you sure it’s bicarb and not vinegar?;-) Try both and have a bubble bath!

    I sleep like a baby too; sleep awhile, wake up and cry awhile, sleep awhile, repeat.

    @ Magpie..

    If you want to regain your “Wherewithal” run to the nearest video rental shop and rent ” FROM HERE TO ETERNITY”.

    Just watching Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr thrashing in the waves on the beach should do the trick. THEN….follow caution #2.

    @Nick - Now there I would disagree with you, ice cream may cool you down in the short term, whereas an apple or frozen cubes of fresh fruit work better. Keep up the fluids but save the alcohol for the evenings.

    @Nancy - Ah! But think of the fun you could have! ;)

    @Magpie - About the ‘bicarb and not vinegar’… you forgot that it cleans out the drain as well!

    @Darlene - I know that song, but leave out the verse about crying! :roll:

    @Nancy - Ahem! :lol:

    Mangoes, Water Melon and Cantaloupes - you just cannot beat that combination for the summer. If you want to be adventurous, add some honey and ice cubes to cubed fruit in a shaker, and consume when it gets too hot. Ah, but you have got to live down here where the temperatures and the humidity are much higher!

    There’s a book called Reader’s Digest Practical Problem Solver has a lot of handy hints in it. The problem is they need them edited and put on a blog just like this one for easier reading :-)

    D@\/e,

    Do want me in prison stealing material from the Reader’s Digest! :roll:

    Haha I’ve been having a giggle at your heatwave. The Paduan said he got burned after an hour in the sun and it was only 22! Enjoy the hot weather and the beach. Here if we can’t sleep, we get naked and drape a wet sarong over us while the fan whirrs in the background! Frankly, I could do with a little sunshine. It’s still cold and rainy! Brrr. @Rummuser . . .I love mangoes!

    @Baino,

    We are on the way to normal temps, our high today will be 17°C and moving down to 13°C by the weekend! You forget it is still a shock to our systems as we had dark cold and wet days non stop for about two years!

    Give me a case of Guinness before bed, and I have no trouble sleeping in 100 degree weather without an air conditioner. Grannymar, you forgot this tip!!

    Gail,

    I would never manage a case of Guinness. One glass -½ pint is my limit so testing this tip is out for me. Now I know a few Irish folk who might agree with you!

    Grannymar, are there any of your ‘more mature’ friends that don’t blog have stories about the good old days that’d keep us entertained ? just a suggestion

    D@\/e,

    My ‘more mature friends’ are scared of the internet and would not want me to tell their stories to the world! :roll:
