A He or a She?

HOW TO TELL THE GENDER OF A BIRD

Until now I never fully understood how to tell the difference between male and female birds.

I always thought it had to be determined surgically.

UNTIL NOW.

Below are Two Birds. Study them closely…

See If You Can Spot Which of The Two Is The Female.

It can be done. Even by one with limited bird watching skills! So Magpie 11 tells me.  He is a teacher and should know these things. :roll:

    I can’t be the first to comment, no I can’t be, can I?
    Yes, yes, yes, I can. Oh, was there a question, well let me think a minute here. Auh, auh, the answer is: OMG I forgot to let Max the wonder cowdog, Retired in, just a sec.
    The answer is the female is the one with the mouth moving, but I can’t think why.

    Morning Brighid!

    What is this with being first? Early or late all comments are welcome. Now calm down and have a coffee.

    Why,the female is the dignified looking one OF COURSE!

    The seagulls are very ‘busy’ on house roofs in my area right now, ensuring that another season of squawking young gulls lies ahead.

    No problem identifying the males!

    Well considering my recent bird watching fiasco, you know the meager limits of my bird watching powers. I ‘d hazard a guess that the female was the one gone to fetch the food while the two males discussed the match…..?

    Grannymar, between you and Magpie, you have got me totally stumped. I thought that I was reasonably intelligent. Now before I go totally bonkers, which one is it? Incidentally, these are not magpies are they?

    @Steph - which one do you think is the dignified looking one?

    @Annb - You might be right there!

    @Judy - Glad I gave Mr Kenju a smile

    @Ramana - Listen… I am a city girl, all birds look the same to me!

    Grannymar,

    It is no mystery who those “guys” are.

    That’s my husband on the right with his buddy and they are watching me back the new car out of the garage…..

    It appears to me that the one on the right is a new Wal-Mart greeter while the other is casing the parking lot.

    Well, obviously the silent long-suffering one is the female while the male is yakking on about how clever he was to build the nest, ward off hostile birds, fix up the TV aerial, locate that juicy bunch of worms etc. Easy.

    Nancy, Brighid & Nick I am becoming more confused with every moment.

    Nah the nagging one is the kid “are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet!”

    Considering my low state of elf this exchange has been a tonic… thanks everyone…BTW it’s not true that teachers know everything…but some don’t like to admit their fallibility….

    @Baino - I never thought of that!

    @Magpie - Glad you enjoyed the tonic, did I put enough gin in it? ;)

    I definitely think I can tell which one is the one sent out for all the food :D

    ChrisD,

    I think they are wondering what is keeping you with the food! ;)

    I’m with Annb (way back nearer the beginning) when she reckoned they were both male because the female had gone to fetch the food. As long as boy birds recognize the girl birds and vice versa I guess I can relax.

    Alice,

    They prolly know the story of the bird and the bees! ;)
