I'm glad you found and used my poem, "Laughter Joy." I may be crazy, but I love writing these things. I've already published a small book of them, and I just finished my series of one for every letter of the alphabet. I'm stopping for a while, but who knows when I will be inspired again. My main point is that everyone, especially seniors, should try writing poems, but not necessarily rictameters. It's fun, and often revealing.

yesterday morning I went down the garden to inspect my new chain of water butts and saw the drops of water on my Lady's Mantle...G you should have come round the front and rung the bell. We'd have given you lunch and a nice glass of wine or two.

On laughter.... It assists learning and creativity too. Make you pupils laugh and they will learn better. It's more pleasant for all than fear, another emotion that can help you learn.

Somewhere I have alist of those airport conversations!

I wonder what the earliest joke you can all remember is?

Commander Murray (on the bridge of HMS Troutbridge) " Err, let's have a bit of decorum on this bridge gentlemen."

Sub Lieutenant Phillips: " De what?"

Commander Murray: " Decorum...(wait for it.) ....You know. It's what you do to apples before you cook em."...
(BBC Home Service "The Navy Lark"

Sorry GM. I just had to do it!

Hello Geri,

I think it is true. I read it in an aviation tradepaper. They have a lot of funny airline stories.
Here's another:

The German Air controllers at Frankfurt Airport are renowned as a short tempered lot. They not only expect a pilot to know his gate location, but how to get there without any assistance from them.

A USAirways plane listened to the following exchange between the German Controllers and a British Airways 747., call sign Speedbird 206.

Speedbird 206: "Frankfurt Tower: Speedbird 206 clear of active runway."

Tower: "Speedbird 206. Taxi to gate Alpha One-Seven."

The BA 747 pulled onto the main taxiway and slowed to a stop.

Tower:" Speedbird Don't you know where you are going?"

Speedbird: Stand by, Tower, I'm looking up our ground location now."

Tower: (With arrogant impatience) Haven't you ever been to Frankfurt before?"

Speedbird 206 : "Yes, eleven times in 1944 in the dark..
And I didn't land."

That's a nice poem and so true, a good laugh is a great tonic. A sense of the ridiculous is what has kept me going through many ups and downs in life.
Excuse me for asking Nancy but that is so funny (!) is it a true incident? I can't imagine the nice but very 'sober' Dutch airport saying anything like that!!

Grannymar,

Are you back in Norn Iron ? How did the trip go? Was the house nice? Are the drapes made yet? Fill us in...

About funny things... You find it in the most unexpected places. Who would expect to get a huge laugh out of an Air traffic Control exchange?

Dublin International Control Tower:

"Ryanair 702 , cleared for takeoff, contact departure on frequency 124.7."

'Ryanair 702: Tower, this is Ryanair 702 switching to departure. By the way after we lifted off we saw some kind of dead animal on the far end of the runway."

Tower: "Delta 635,cleared for takeoff behind Ryanair, contact departure on frequency 124.7. Did you copy that report from Ryanair 702?"

Delta 635:"Roger: and yes, we copied Ryanair.. We've already notified our caterers....

Laughter is good alright, especially that uncontrollable silly guffawing that hits now and then, you know the one, where tears stream and you worry about wetting your pants. Doesn't happen often enough but when it does . . pure gold!

Chrisb I empathise with the car troubles. Mine's due for registration and insurance . . .two-minute noodles for the rest of the month!
