Sorry Darling!

Alistair Darling The Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK has been barred from every pub in Kendal, Cumbria since he increased the cost of a pint by 4 pence in his latest budget.

No drinking sign

According to a BBC report:

Last month an Edinburgh bar was credited with inspiring an internet campaign aimed at barring the chancellor from every pub in Britain.

Drinkers at the Utopia bar in Easter Road were angered when the MP for Edinburgh South West increased duty on a pint of beer by 4p and raised spirits duty by 55p a bottle.

They spread their message via blogs and a Facebook group.

It set me thinking…. Would these tactics work on certain Ministers in Ireland…. The Blogging world is a Powerful place. A new National Anthem is needed. How about basing it on

DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING from Les Miserables.

I love that song. I sang it as part of the Male Voice Choir many moons ago.

I’ll happily lead the chorus against both the increase in the price of the pint and the increase in Ministers’ wages.

    Darren

Would it be possible to add appropriate lyrics?

    Something like:

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a nation
Who will not be poor again!
When the size of your wage cheques
Does not reflect the work you do
We call an election to start
    When tomorrow comes!

(It’s a work in progress! I’ll get back to you later.) :P

He’d have done better to suspend the Long hours licences for off license sales in Supermarkets……

Even the local Kebab Shop is applying for a liquor licence until 2:00a.m.

And they won’t let us play traditional music in English pubs without a license but the Giant screen football thing doesn’t require an entertainments license……descends from Hobby Horse with difficulty!!!

    Grannymar,

Irish politics is so partisan that there will always be pubs that would welcome ministers, no matter how unpopular they might be elsewhere.

Trouble with the French Revolution was that one bunch of thugs was replaced by another more murderous one, and it was the ordinary people who suffered - as ever!

I agree it is the ordinary people who suffer, but as you said in your own post today - the ordinary people can make a difference too!

Only problem is ….. every group has its own agenda.

    We’d never agree.

Not being able to agree is what makes the Irish the wonderful race they are.

Reminds me of the time, GM, here in Canada when the web started a campaign to have a hateful candidate for prime minister by the name of Stockwell Day to legally change his first name to Doris. Over a million people signed and it destroyed his political career.
