What a lovely memory. I keep a lot of letters although I must admit to getting rid of a lot a few years ago. Having read this I think I regret my spring clean.

Grannymar, this made me cry! My mum gave me a box this Christmas - she'd been working on it for 2 years. It is a 'memory box' in which she has put a letter like that one, baby photos of me, the little hospital tag that was wound my wrist after I was born, my first clothes, school reports, newspaper clippings of school prize days, a journal charting all her memories of my childhood... I will cherish it as long as I live! You're right - there's so much more value and meaning in old letters etc than in old emails...

K8 I love a 'real' letter.

Think how many books of letters have been published over the years.

My favoutite book in letter form was 84 Charring Cross Road. I like to think I am an old romantic at heart.

What a lovely post!! It's a great idea to revive the postage stamp. The buzz felt on hearing the letter box clatter is infinately nicer than seeing '5 messages, 2 unread!' on your screen :)

When you think of the problems that one day off line causes to the business world, earthquakes major fires etc. don't bare thinking about!

My brother in Australia brought it home to me when he talked about preparing for evacuation from approaching forest fires.

If you could only take one shoebox, how would you fill it?
